CHRISTMAS IN THE KEYS
On December 7, head to Robbie’s Marina in Islamorada for a boat trip to a bygone era. It’s a Lignumvitae Christmas, a once-a-year glimpse into how the holidays were celebrated on Lignumvitae Key more than 100 years ago. While dulcimer players in period costume greet arriving guests dockside and a park ranger leads tours through the hardwood hammock, the real highlight is a tour of the historic Matheson House – festooned for the holidays in tropical greenery (native grape vines, palm fronds and Spanish moss stand in for traditional holly) and ornaments made of oyster shells. A sip of sublime Key limeade –made from real yellow Key limes, naturally – is the perfect finishing touch to this look back at Lignumvitae of yesteryear.
Address: Take the boat from Robbie’s Marina, 77522 Overseas Hwy, Islamorada.
